The Hawaii County Public Access, Open Space and Natural Resources Preservation Commission meets at 10 a.m. today at the West Hawaii Civic Center, Building G conference room.
The public is welcome to attend.
Book clubs meeting at Keauhou store
Attendees to upcoming book club meetings will explore fiction and nonfiction books at Kona Stories book store in Keauhou Shopping Center.
The fiction book club will discuss “The Golem and the Jenni” by Helene Wecker at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The book is an immigrant tale that combines elements of Jewish and Arab folk mythology.
The nonfiction club will review “The Graves Are Walking” by John Kelly at 6 p.m. March 25. The book gives a comprehensive account of the Irish Potato Famine, delivered with novelistic flair.
Kona Stories fiction book club meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month, and the nonfiction book club gathers at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday. No membership or fees are associated with these groups and monthly attendance is not required. Bring a pupu or beverage to share.

Musician addresses brain injury group
The Brain Injury Support group meets from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hawaiian Rehab Services, mauka of Hawaii Community Federal Credit Union on Hualalai Road.
Carl Hoffman will demonstrate his love of bluegrass music with the five-string banjo and flattop guitar. He and his wife Alice believe playing music was instrumental in the healing process of his traumatic brain injury.
Invited are all brain injury, stroke or other neuro-trauma survivors, their families and caregivers, interested professionals and the public.

Hala weaving class offered March 18
Attendees will learn how to prepare hala leaves for weaving and will create a hala bracelet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 18 at Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain Cook.
Cost is $10 for Bishop Museum members and $15 for nonmembers. Class size is limited to 15.

American Legion, auxiliary to meet
American Legion Post 20 and American Legion Auxiliary meet Wednesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post on Makala Boulevard. Fellowship begins at 3:30 p.m. The regular meeting starts at 4 and will include discussion of plans for the Memorial Day ceremony May 26 at the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery. Soil, water group meets in Waimea
Mauna Kea Soil and Water Conservation District meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Waimea center, 67-1185 Mamalahoa Highway, Suite 148. Kona Sunrise Rotary holds club assembly
The Rotary Club of Kona Sunrise will hold a club assembly discussion Wednesday at its weekly breakfast meeting.
Club president Vicki Kalman will discuss upcoming club events and various Rotary functions. The club meets for breakfast at 6:45 a.m. Wednesdays at Hale Halawai. Breakfast is $10.

Instead of its usual meeting at Hale Halawai, Kailua-Kona Seniors will gather at 10 a.m. Wednesday at West Hawaii Civic Center at the council chambers in Building A.
The group will watch the movie, “Keeping Mum.” The event is free and open to the public.

Dietician teaches class at Tutu’s House
Coinciding with National Nutrition Month, registered dietician Vivienne Aronowitz will lead a discussion on how to evaluate a person’s eating style.
From 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Tutu’s House in Waimea, she will demonstrate how to plan the optimal eating style for a particular physiology and needs that results in the best possible health.
